Here We Go…
Here we go again.
And unfortunately this new ‘mass culture’ is spreading like wild fire. I have grown up no less than 10 minutes away from the beach my entire life and being in the sea comes hand in hand with that. To my amazement people have always rejected anyones ability to find beauty in anything unconventional, like surfing. Surf culture is taking the world by storm and moving people in a way that makes you think. All the times you have ever been unhappy with whats in front of you on a day to day basis are overruled by the joy you get form something so unbelievable. This video depicts the beauty of being able to say ‘i was there’ like nothing else. The rush you get when your toes hit the water, your first tube- and every one after that, even the first time you stand up solo. It’s like being reborn and shit is it addictive!
So what has happened is consumerism is taking over, from competitions to endorsements to Hollywood having to put a penguin on a board- at least the message was write. To me anything you can do to make money and be happy is the right choice, but when something you love because it set you free, turns solely into a job, or something people can make a profit from by standing on top of you, shit needs to change. Competition is healthy, but only in the right hands.
Quicksilver to me are the pioneers in keeping it under control and keep focused on their surfers needs and what surfing is all about. Saying ‘F*ck YOU’ to living in a cage and stuck to a 9-5. It is a counter culture element that has been prominent since the 60’s and has slowly started to be seen a thing cool kids do…. instead of a way of life.
